The Royal Escape Race Course

The 67 nautical mile Royal Escape Race course is deceptively simple. From the start between Brighton's Piers the fleet sails either East or West depending on the wind direction for a mile or so before turning South and heading for the Greenwich Light Vessel, which is left to port. From there boats sail on for Fécamp - it looks so easy, but wind conditions vary and the trick is gauging how much tide you are going to have to deal with on the French side. Ask anybody who has done this race before how the race is so often won or lost in the last 10 miles.
